Is a wide variety of winners on Tour in today's game a good thing?

27 Professionals Contributed |
Gone are the days of dominant PGA Tour players (think Jack, Arnie, Tiger) - we're now seeing a lot of incredible talent on the Tour. But is this good for the game? Did those dominant players and their rivalries bring about more spectators to the sport?

I don't necessarily want to see just one player dominate, nor do I want to see a different player win every week.

I don’t necessarily want to see just one player dominate, nor do I want to see a different player win every week.
To me in an ideal situation you will have your top 10 to 20 players going at it and hopefully you can get some great final round head to head match ups. It would be very enjoyable to watch.

I think it’s great for the game but not for the tv ratings.

Its always fun to see different players win on the PGA tour. I think it’s great for the game but not for the tv ratings.

I think we are seeing the Tiger Woods effect now where he made golf cool and all these younger players just idolized him and wanted to be him when they grew up.

Having new winners on the tour each week just shows the depth of talent in the world of golf these days. I think we are seeing the Tiger Woods effect now where he made golf cool and all these younger players just idolized him and wanted to be him when they grew up. Enjoy watching the talent and work on your own talent as much as you can!!

I feel we all relate to certain types of energies that other people exude.

Give me as many examples of excellence as possible. Embrace the reign of a Champion while reminding yourself there’s always someone out there that we don’t know…..yet.

I would suppose that this question arose from Editors observation that we are being exposed to the stark contrast between Tiger’s era of dominance against today’s era of multiple winners. Let’s dissect that, briefly.

I feel we all relate to certain types of energies that other people exude. Some of us loved the one man show we were treated to for a decade. The path of sacrifice that was shown to us in Tiger Woods. And there were many of us that were elated to see a clean cut kid from Jesuit Prep School in Dallas, Tx , take on the best of the best at Golf’s perennial test in Augusta, Ga.

Someone reading this right now was elevated off their seat when Sergio finally claimed his spot in the immortal world of Masters Champions.

The point I want to emphatically state is that there is no singular path to victory at this level. There are so many ways to get there, we ought to embrace this era of competition. Competition, after all, is what this game is about at the highest level, and it’s for us to decide who or what we want to compete against.

Absolutely. All golfers have a few (I'd say five) commonalities, and a whole lot of different preferences

Absolutely. All golfers have a few (I’d say five) commonalities, and a whole lot of different preferences, like grip strength, alignment, how far off their ribs the trail elbow gets in the backswing, and a whole lot more. Golfers should notice and focus on the commonalities in their own practice, though. We call them the 5 Simple Keys®, and they are 1: Steady Head, 2: Weight Forward (at impact), 3: Inline Impact, 4: Sweetspot Path, and 5: Clubface Control.

It helps golf enthusiasts see a myriad of golf swings and styles that are successful.

100%! A wide variety of winners on Tour is a great thing for the game. Though there are golf fans out there rooting for Tiger to eclipse the total wins and majors which is also great for the game. Keeping viewers and fans engaged in golf is a huge part of the vitality of the game. It helps golf enthusiasts see a myriad of golf swings and styles that are successful. Most would likely think that on Tour you need to have a perfect swing or technique to win or be successful. There is no such thing as a perfect swing and all of us have some form of athletic limitation. A good tournament to watch is the Sentry Tournament of Champions as it showcases many types of Tour talents. I am a believer of swing your own swing – variety is the spice of life! Fore!

The reality is that the dominant winners are compelling. That’s why we watch sports.

Multiple winners on tour have always been a good thing and will continue to be a good thing. The more people that win send the pool and make it easier for a dominant winner to rise above and create separation value. The reality is that the dominant winners are compelling. That’s why we watch sports. Everybody thinks they want parody but nobody watches sports for parity.

I see a much greater value in having events that everyone in the field has a chance to win and I think we are right there now.

I think the wide variety of winners on the PGA Tour is a great thing for the game and most importantly the future of the game. Today’s player leaves college and are instantly ready to win on the tour and from my view this adds excitement. This also tell’s the youngsters through teenagers of today that if they work hard for the next few years, not only can they make the tour but they can win and have an amazing and prosperous future.

It seems to me that many fans of the game and the media enjoy rivalries and try to create such rivalries ie – Rory McElroy vs Brooks Koepka, but I see a much greater value in having events that everyone in the field has a chance to win and I think we are right there now.

I love the PGA Tour’s future, we get to watch the Greatest of All Time comeback and still win, as well as the deepest fields in the tour’s history and this only enhances our game.

Yes I think that having a wide variety of winners on tour is great for the game. It not only shows the depth of talented players on the tour, but also exemplifies that everyone has a chance to win. It should encourage and inspire the next generation of collegiate and aspiring professionals.

It shows that anybody can win anytime and that the tour isn’t just being dominated by only a few good players that win every week.

I believe having new blood in the winners circle is a good thing for golf because it shows that anybody can win anytime and that the tour isn’t just being dominated by only a few good players that win every week. It also shows the strength of the whole tour that if you earn your spot out there, you can and should be able to win any given week because you’re one of the best players in the world.

Not only is it a good thing, it is inevitable. With the quality and development of golf instruction, technology and fitness training, player development is out of sight. You are witnessing the new normal. Expect this to continue as more and more golfers believe they can do it!

If a less recognized player has a great week, it is just his dream come true and our pleasure to watch it happen.

Our tour is primarily made up of people seeking the dream. When someone has a chance to break through, most viewers may find themselves interested to see if this could be that player’s day. It is always nice to see the big names that we root for. They also set the bar, that a win from this field is a legitimate feat. If a less recognized player has a great week, it is just his dream come true and our pleasure to watch it happen. I still remember Lee Elder beating Jack Nicklaus in a playoff for his first win and a trip to the Masters.

These guys are proving that no matter where you come from, there is a possibility for you to fulfill your dreams of becoming a world class player at the highest level.

Absolutely!!! This is the diversity golf has needed for a very long time. Look at how many global players have won over the last few years. Especially rookies just getting started! I am super excited about it! These guys are proving that no matter where you come from, there is a possibility for you to fulfill your dreams of becoming a world class player at the highest level. I am seeing more and more kids from different ethnic and economic backgrounds becoming interested in golf because of the variety to winners. If the same guy(s) won every week, I would get bored watching golf.

In the last year, golf has been able to add different role-players to their inventory of champions.

A wide variety of winners is always a good thing for golf. In the last year, golf has been able to add different role-players to their inventory of champions. The news media has done a terrific job casting a new “villain” in Patrick Reed, the “flawed hero” in Tiger Woods, the new “cool uncle” with Phil Mickelson, with the “young guns” Xander Schauffele, Bryson Dechambeau, and John Rahm. This makes golf exciting and with new formats, provides different match-ups for the crowd to see. With the players getting caught with “hot mics” and the influence of social media, golf is in a play is hasn’t been in a very log time.

Like most golfers, the 2020 season is going to be spectacular! If you’d like to play like the pros in 2020, log on to SwingEssentials.com and download our golf app. Your first lesson is always free! See you soon.

As a fan I feel this adds more excitement to the events.

I believe that it is good to have such a wide variety of winners. The days of Tiger winning as often as he did has gone away as the newer players are more tournament ready and the competition is even better. It now gives the fan an opportunity to hopefully see more players in a televised event as now anyone that gets hot could win. As a fan I feel this adds more excitement to the events. I also believe that as the money has increased and sponsorship dollars have also increased the drive of some players is to just be good and not great. Tiger wanted to crush all in his way we do not see that very much in the newer generation. Good or bad I guess depends on the check you cash and the life you want to lead!

It's a good thing for those "wide variety of winners!" However, like other sports, I think the game is more compelling if there's one dominating force that everyone else is gunning for.

It’s a good thing for those “wide variety of winners!” However, like other sports, I think the game is more compelling if there’s one dominating force that everyone else is gunning for. When Tiger was in his prime every tournament he entered garnered the question, “Tiger or the field?” Whether you love him or hate him the mere fact of his presence elevates the competition and galvanizes the viewers.

It is a positive sign of where the game is and the direction that the game is going.

I would say that the variety of winners on tour is a good thing. It is a positive sign of where the game is and the direction that the game is going. The quality of players coming up through the mini tours and college is getting better and better every season. Tiger raised the bar in the early 2000s by his display of dominance, which help create the training process that juniors started to follow to emulate the best player in the world. It seems like each year, more and more players are starting to prove themselves as contenders each week. Definitely makes those who play fantasy golf that more difficult, ha. With the advancement in technology, fitness regiments and knowledge of how to properly train the body for golf, we will continue to see the level of play increase from year to year. One negative we are starting to see is the increase in injuries to younger players. It will be interesting to see how the bodies of the new generation hold up due to their training process. It is still fun to watch each event every week and see who will come out on top.

More young players are winning these days in my opinion due to familiarity to the equipment and balls.

More young players are winning these days in my opinion due to familiarity to the equipment and balls. The Pro V1 came out in 2002 and that changed the game. The first balls these young guys played in junior golf was longer and straighter than the balls guys in their late 30’s or 40’s had to learn and hone their games. Their bodies and games were designed to hit the ball far and not have to worry as much about keeping the ball from spinning off line. Junior development leads to long term patterns. These young guys’ games are built for the modern ball and drivers.
