What techniques can you use to fix inconsistent ball position and establish a repeatable setup?
The Influence of Ball Position
Ball position is all about the club striking the ball at it’s most efficient and opportune time. For Driver, this is towards the front of your stance, as the club is moving upwards. And if the tee height or ball position is off, the flight of your golf shot can either be fantastic or complete disaster. Check out a video I produce a couple years back about how ball position influences the outcome of your golf shots.
A consistent set-up
I like to use alignment rods for both alignment and ball position. It is also important to have ball position in the correct location based on the low point of your swing. This means you should use your head and shoulders for reference rather than your feet. Your feet are convenient, but changing stance width will change the ball relative to the low point. I like the ball opposite the forward side of your face when the ball is on the ground and a few inches forward for a driver. Set your head first and then your feet is my recommendation.

Use an Alignment or Golf Club
I will first off check of this to Mike Bender, when I first started playing golf like most I was told the following, Wedges to 9iron place the Ball in the middle the from there slightly forward the Driver inside Left heel. Then one year I began to take lessons from top coach Mike Bender, well I actually played the ball to forward. After nearly 20 minutes he pointed he wanted to play the ball for my irons where my LEFT Ear was. So he grabbed an alignment an showed me it was 4 inches from the center of our body. Do I play the ball forward for a Driver you bet, but if I want to flight lower I move it back some. the bottom line for me at least my contact is much better since then.
Practice?
Proper alignment, set up, posture and ball position are the foundation of our swing and they require practice and regular checks. You can do this by using alignment aides like sticks, video, and regular checkups with your instructor. Even a golfing buddy can help with alignment. Remember though, ball position changes with unlevel stances so they are fluid on the course so that a player can make proper contact.
